NOT true ! there is a limit called the AS1 line - you're NOT supposed to go below that AS1 line.

Its called a BROW TINT - I've done mine (below the legal limit/line) - cost me 20 bucks to do BOTH sides (split windshield).

I also have my side (door) windows & vent windows tinted (15% light transmission)...never had a problem.

your windshield is HUGE - unless you go w/ some UV reflective film ( big bucks ) you're not gonna seen any significant reduction in heat.

a brow tinted windshield isn't gonna do anything to keep any real heat or sun out !

Once we're parked we place Double Bubble (foil backed) insulation in the windshield & door windows & pull the shades shut....even in 100+ degree weather it keeps the heat & sun out (and our 13,5 BTU A/C keeps it cool).

If I cover the top 33% of the windshield with 50% tint that would give me a 15% reduction on light as well as a reduction in heat. When parked is not the issue its when driving.

IF you could cover that much of your windshield, you'd be at an attention getting / pull me over level....an inch or two below the AS1 line is one thing, but covering 1/3 or more will surely get unwanted attn.

you might want to look into some of the HEAT & UV blocking / clear films - you could cover the entire windscreen with that (since it has minimal if any TINT).

I had this product installed almost 10 years ago on the drivers/passenger AND windshield. It has been a tremendous help reducing heat in the front of the coach.

I have like 5 feet of windshield so I am not sure that covering 20 or so inches will cause alarm. It still leaves 100% of the part you see out of while driving. IF I am using the tinted part while driving then I am looking at the stars.

As noted when driving you can only cover the top so much

now.. Most states I think how much is expressed in inches

It should be in percent but alas... I do not write 'em (laws) I just read 'em. (I also do not enforce them (any more) Just let you know about 'em)

Recommendation: Do your research first. Make a decision.

I'm assuming you've lived in Massachusetts long enough to know how anal they are with vehicle inspections, and how eager most police departments are to pull violators over. All part of their "revenue enhancement" strategy. :)

Read the link and paragraph I posted. Covering any more than what is specified by the RMV will get you into trouble, and it's on the front windshield so it's not like you can hide it. And since most (if not all) states have similar laws for the front windshield, you won't even be safe out of state.

And yes, in states such as Massachusetts, they have different levels of "legal tint" for factory glass and after-market tints. Anything that comes from the factory is fine. If it's after-market, then the tint levels change.

Good Luck in solving your problem. I, for one, try not to bring any additional "constabulary attention" to my vehicles. (Different story than when I was a "kid" in my '71 Mach 1 Mustang. But I'm past that stage in my life now. :) )
