Windshield replacement and w/frame rust notes
I previously posted that my 08 Itasca 30B developed a leak at the top of the windshield and found that it was caused by the windshield's steel frame rusting. I cleaned the exposed rusted areas and applied POR 15.
Now a couple months later, a rock or pellet gun made a big chip in my field of vision and the windshield had to be replaced.
I interviewed the various potential installers and found one that was experienced with RV windshield frame rust. They wire brush the rust and then apply Sika urethane primer which dries in a few minutes and bonds to the urethane sealant that holds the windshield on.
With the windshield out, the frame was seen to have rust in all four corners and all along the lower edge. They said it's not just a Winnie problem, but that many RV's have similar steel windshield frames that are prone to rust.
The other thing to note is that once installed, the shade banding along the top of the new windshield was different than the original on the other side (it's a two piece windshield). The new band is a different color shade, is lighter and is shorter.
Both the rust problem and window tint variation are things to keep in mind if/when you need a windshield replacement.
