If your policy has comprehensive for glass you will be covered. Deductibles are calculated on your premium. It is a choice when you start your policy, comprehensive with low or no deductible is more expensive, higher deductibles mean lower cost.
I would be very reluctant to put anything on my windshield, distortion, glare etc would be a concearn.
Bottom line you will get a broken windshield, it's a matter of how bad, and how long you can stand it.
I am a firm believer in windshield repair. Fix those little ones before they get big.
