Way back in 1956 one of the Chevy V-8's that I restored had the factory AC and this meant no transmission dipstick and the only way to check and fill the Powerglide transmission was through a removable plug on the side of a special plate. The AC box under the hood prevented access to the dipstick so it was eliminated on some cars and just left inaccessible on others. You checked the transmission fluid just like the differential was checked.
