- mlts22Explorer III wondered why the new class "C"s at the RV show I was at yesterday were either using the 5.4 V8 or going to the E-450 on even the short models. Now I know.
I can see why Winnebago has started making Transit rigs. For the class "C"s that don't need an E-450 chassis, a Transit isn't a bad choice. carringb wrote:
I'm not so sure about that. The vans are tested to the same duty cycle as the cutaways, and don't have any frontal area restrictions beyond other full size trucks.
I strongly suspect it may be a victim of the 2016 EPA CO2 limits for vehicles under 14,000 pounds. These new regs also mean full-profile boxes cannot be installed on the E350 with the V10. Only the V8. The E450 is not affected.
Interesting. I would have never thought as emissions as a limitation.- DakzukiExplorer IIThe MB chassis has a higher payload capacity which could have driven BF's decision.
The Ford 5 cylinder diesel will work just fine IMO. Lots of Sprinter based RVs running around with less power and just a 5 speed gearbox. - carringbExplorer

No Ecoboost option, I imagine the Eco can't handle a commercial duty cycle on the cutaway without overheating and/or derating.

I Googled "Transit 3.7" and got several different HP ratings from 275 to 302, none anywhere near 380. The same for the Transit with the EccoBoost which comes in at 310.
I have no idea where the 380 HP figure comes from. Straight from Ford's website, the engine options in the Transit cutaway are either a 185 hp diesel or a 275 hp gas V6. The Transit cab and chassis can be bought with the 380 (+/-) HP 3.7L V6 or the inline 5 diesel engines, but not the more powerful Ecoboost 3.5L V6.
TO bad Ford is not offering the stronger engine in the dually cab and chassis Transit.
Fred.
The 3.7 is rated at 302 HP at 6,500 rpm. Folks fuss about the V-10 reving to 4,250 to reach max HP (305). I can't imagine what that V-6 sounds like at 6,500.

It might sound somewhat similar, if a normally aspirated V10 and a turbo V6 ever sound at all similar. The number of cylinders firing per second (and hence the primary tone of the engine noise) is actually a little bit higher with the V10 at 4250 RPM.
I would guess that the 3.5L engine isn't designed for prolonged operation at high output, or the cooling system (and space for it) isn't sufficient to dissipate continuous long-term output on the chassis cab. Regardless, 380 HP should be plenty sufficient, I would think; that's about 100 HP more than I have on my '98 with the V10, and I think it is perfectly acceptable (though I would not complain about having more power). - midnightsadieExplorer III have a MB I 5 cyc diesel and drive to arizona almost every yar, I have enough power to make the mountains. I,ve even passed some 5,er,s yep ain,t no V 10 but it does the job.
