Florida Keys

Hello All - just joining the group - we have a Class A and live in the Hudson Valley.  We are planning a trip to Florida in the fall and we're looking for stops along the way.  We don't want to take Rt 95 until we get further south, so we're thinking of taking Rt 84 West to Rt. 81 South.  Any suggestions for stops or sights would be appreciated.  I'm a little nervous about driving the Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys.  Has anyone done it and how was it?  I'm already nervous about it being a windy day

  • The bridge shouldn't bother you. For a good part of the way, it's down low and only rises when you get to the navigational channel. I was there in November in my motorhome, but it is a B+, like driving an SUV. I used to drive a 41' Tiffin Phaeton, though, and would do the Keys without any anxiety. I am more anxious driving the MIghty Mackinac bridge to the UP in ANYTHING, including a car. Keep in mind, RV's are not permitted down in Key West due to narrow streets and tree canopy overhead. It's always breezy down in the Keys, so if you are uncomfortable, get a campsite (plan ahead for that) and take a car.

I'm not that uncomfortable driving in height or windy conditions - been to the mountains and have crossed several bridges along our travels.  I was just curious since the bridge is so long what anyone has experienced.  I have heard it's a beautiful trip.  We have reservations, but not in Key West.  We'll be staying about 20 minutes from Key West.  Thanks for your response.

  • If you’re nervous about driving your RV anywhere in Florida, best bet would be to take the car and get a hotel room.
Not easy to say but driving a large vehicle ain’t for everyone. Just some don’t realize their limits.
