Crisco is what my mother used - mostly for pies, etc.
But for frying and most other things that required oil, she kept one of those grease containers with the strainer on the top on the counter for bacon grease. I can see it now - a pink metal container with a black lid. I can't ever remember any vegetable oil or liquid oils of any kind around.
