My grandfather was from Scotland. He always mashed carrots in his potatoes. My sister still does. DW says it makes the potatoes look funny. Thanks for the laugh though no one has called me a rookie for a loooong time. Now if I could just get carded at the bar.
Turnip/potato mash is a great favorite in my family- I got it from my New Jersey born Mother, who in turn learned it from her mother, born in Iowa.
The Irish side of the family, however, prefers what they call "colcannon" in which cooked kale or cabbage is the main addition.
