Alcohol stoves can't put out the maximum heat heat that a petroleum stove can, but it only means they can take a little longer. I have a friend who uses one river camping and it works fine. The fuel is cheap, the fumes aren't bad and the vapor doesn't sink and explode when lit.
The distribution of the vapor is why they are used on boats, that and the fact that alcohol mixes with water. No explosive fumes in the bilge from a stove is a good thing.
I should add that fuel is pretty cheap at Lowes or Home Depot. My friends stove is a Trangia which seems to be an accepted back packing stove.
