Disappointed

Spotted a Camp Chef commemorative DO today and put it in the cart to buy. On the way to check out, I noticed the notice: "Made in China". I put it back. It was a good looking DO but I don't trust the quality of the iron as it may have toxic metals in the mix.

Looks like I'll be staying with Lodge from here on out.

If you truly want a really good DO, go on ebay and buy a Griswold or a Wagner. Not a wagner 1812.

Lighter, smoother and just a better DO.

I agree that the older ci is better. I prefer Wagner myself, yep Wagner over Wagner-Ware.

But there were other good foundries: Martin in US, McClary and Findlay in Canada. Plus, Smart and Javelin in Canada. I have some others in 1 item sample. Shop Ebay carefully.

  • Lodge ordinary cast iron is Made in USA; enameled cast iron is Made in China.
  • Camp Chef cast iron is a brand with a good reputation. Administration and quality control are in the USA. They are done overseas under head office direction.

If you check the regular ci forums, you will find their memberships also speak well of Camp Chef.

  • "China Cast Iron Valve manufacturers directory, company list, exporters listing & suppliers site. ... management system, also passed the API 6D certification, CE safety . The cast iron cookware item series includes: Enameled casseroles(10cm~38cm), cocottes, frying pan, baking pan, bake pan, cast iron pot with glass lid, Chinese wok with Glass lid, fondue sets, camping cookware, sauce pan, trivet, chicken baking casserole, etc. "
This is a quote from another forum on this subject. BTW: The Lodge enameled cast iron is made in China.
  • Sad but true, I distrust our commercially sold food more than metal products from China.
