Corelle is always great for the feel and fact that it's difficult to break. I use Corelle basic white platters for food but have never been enthused by their eating dish patterns.
Looking for something different in material or design?
Melamine is lightweight and comes in some interesting patterns and textures that mimic stoneware. Williams-Sonoma has quite the selection as does Crate and Barrel.
Do NOT be enticed by the Temptations Melamine dish sets sold on QVC. I bought a set 2 years back and haven't been happy w/ the plate sizes (mostly buffet not dinner plates)or durability. They've only been handwashed and the polka dot pattern is flaking off of the acyrlic glasses. GRR.
