The biggest item I can't do without is a pan to cook in. I use 2 metal pans, the ones used to change your oil, that are painted with grill black. I invert one and hold the bottoms together with a bolt and wing nut. I reverse them for storage. These work great and can even be used on grass without burning it.
I bought an old meat hook at a garage sale and use that for a lid lifter.
That fire-pan sounds like a great idea. Gonna make one.
