You are either very suspicious person or have taken just a little bit of 'writers liberties' setting up the scene :B
Maybe they had run out of propane and did not know where to locate more, thus heating the food outside? Or be afraid to run the propane stove like someone I know. She must go outside, while her husband lights the number of stove burners that they will use to cook dinner that night.
Or they like the smoky flavor of the fire heating their cans of food?
I would not be thinking stolen RV right away. . .
