- Super_DaveExplorerI couldn't take reading this thread anymore with all the cold rain we had the last few days so ham scraps went into the smoker and beans are now in the pot simmering.
Now, to knock off something from the corn bread thread and dinner will be served!! - BajaLindaExplorerI like lentils and barley and beans. I can come to any of your hambone meals. Just don't forget the hambone and the corn bread.

Navy Beans
2 cans of HOT Rotel
Sliced Jalapeno Sausage
Diced Onion
Few pieces of sliced bacon
HIGH on Crock pot for 1.5 hrs - then on LOW for 5 or 6
ENJOY!
Nice!
Sounds good to me also, and would be delicious with any other bean or black eyed pea :C - Turbo_Diesel_DuExplorerSoak a bag of navy beans (Wally World) over nite in a large pot with about 1 inch of water over the top. Next day rinse well and cut up a large onion and put in a crock pot. Cover the beans with the hambone and cook on high for four hours after adding a can of Rotel tomatoes and sprinkling a dusting of Cajun seasoning powder. You can even add a little smoked sausage if you want. Served over wild rice and chopped up onions. JMHO Will make your tongue slap your momma.LOL
- For me, definitely split pea soup. DW no longer lets me eat bean soup. :R
- MerryExplorerThese all sound delicious! You're going to need a lot more ham bones
- IAMICHABODExplorer IISoak a package of Black Eye Peas overnight
Simmer the bone in lots of water for hours. Put it in the fridge overnight so you can skim the fat off, after that is done add the ham broth and chunks to the Black Eye Peas. Adding a chopped onion and your favorite seasonings. I use Suzi Q.
Simmer until Black Eye Peas are tender stirring occasionally.
Serve with Buttered Cornbread and Molasses. And Ice tea.
Some like to have a bottle of Tabasco handy just incase the feeling strikes.:B - StimExplorerLarge pot, bone, 2 lb frozen mixed veggies, taters, onion and Barley. Water as needed.
Bring to boil and let simmer until taters are soft and meat has fallen off of the bone. The longer the better for the flavors to blend.
Even better when re-heated as left overs!
I had a problem with a spiral sliced ham bone. The slicer nicked the bone a bunch and I had bone chips in the soup. - pasusanExplorerIt's funny how everyone is going with beans... We make plain old ham bone soup. Simmer the bone in lots of water for hours. Put it in the fridge overnight to be able to skim the fat off the top. Cut up the meat off the bone and set aside in fridge till later. Put the stock on the stove and add lots of veggies... Chopped potatoes and carrots, green beans, corn, peas, cauliflower. Add a few spices of your liking. Simmer till veggies are tender then add in the ham pieces.
Yum. And this only gets better with time.
This is exactly the way I make turkey soup also except I omit the potatoes and serve with cooked noodles.
We are having bean soup tomorrow, but not with a precious ham bone. :) - Ron3rdExplorer III

Sopa Oaxaca (I first had this soup in Mexico. This recipe duplicates the real thing.)
Soak a bag of dry black beans overnight in 6 cups of water(or boil for an hour)
In the morning add:
The ham bone
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped onion
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cayenne
1 Bay leaf
Simmer this soup all day. Then remove the remaining meat from the ham bone, dice it up and return to the pot. Discard the bone.
Ladle into bowl. Garnish with diced monterey jack cheese, diced avocado and crumbled tortilla chips.
Wow!
