Last Christmas I was invited to dinner at a friend's place.. time, 4:30. I thought that was a bit early, but, silly me, I arrived on time.
I was alone; the 2 cooks were in the kitchen for awhile. After 5pm, others started arriving. These were all people I didn't know. By the time everyone showed up there were 8 of us - and then the drinking began.
Being polite I patiently sat and listened to dumb jokes and personal conversations between people I didn't know. With all the snacking and drinking it made me wonder if this was a drinking party or a dinner party. The cooks didn't seem to be doing much, and now it was after 6pm. Hubby host asked wifey if dinner would be ready soon. "Oh yes, in about 15 minutes", she said. A very inebriated large man said "that's ok.. take your time, we're just enjoying the conversation." I was thinking he was too full of snacks and booze to eat anything.
That 15 minutes was over an hour later, and we finally sat at the table at 7:12pm. Do you think the drinking and chatting were just a bit overdone? I'm going to be more cautious from whom I accept dinner invites from now on!
