I agree it's rude to keep guests waiting for dinner. Good hosts will indicate in the invitation when dinner will be served so those of us who do not enjoy a prolonged cocktail period can come later.
OTOH, it doesn't sound as though dinner conversation would have been very scintillating at any rate.
