There's a big difference between being invited to dinner, and sharing a bag of chips. The OP was referring to an average dinner invitation.
It's rude to invite someone to dinner, and not serve a decent meal.
If you just want conversation, invite them over for coffee. If you want to break bread-serve up your best.
