Home made Vanilla Extract

Going to try to make a batch of home made vanilla extract to give as gifts for Christmas.

I've read a lot of how-to's on the internet and there's a lot of conflicting info. One says clear bottles, another says colored bottles, also wide variations in the ratio of vanilla beans to vodka.

Has anyone actually done this?
  • My vanilla beans were delivered today. I'm getting a late start, so my ppl might have to let it age a bit before using, but I still think it's a cool idea for gifts. I also saw that someone used cherry vodka to make a cherry/vanilla extract. I'm going to give that a try, too.

Pier 1 has awesome bottles too!

  • Have access to dark bottles? It'll make the extract last longer w/ no concerns about sun degradation.
I've actually never made vanilla extract so can't say more:).
  • I have done it as well, although just for personal use, not gifts. I found it does take quite awhile, so start soon! Also, I used a clear bottle, but did keep it in a cool, dark place while it "did its thing". Good luck!
