How to take milk?

We are wondering how without stopping often, how do you keep milk for cereal? Use Creamora powder for coffee but don't know about cereal. Ideas?

  • We have always just bought the carton with a cap on top, and kept ice around it in the cooler, no problems. This will be our first year with a fridge in MH so we will see if we got a good fridge or not, but will still only buy a carton at a time..no three bag thing.
  • Freeze it. It will last a couple of days like that in a cooler and makes a nice ice pack at the same time.
  • Go to Dollar Tree. For $1.00 a quart the have shelf stable milk. I just bought some yesterday that does not expire until April 2015. Prechill a quart before using. I always carry 10 - 12 quarts on trips. It is perfect to give to the less fortunate that we all see and some of us help while on the road. Enough for a day for them and if you have some cereal they have breakfast and a nourishing drink. When we have given it to people we help it usually lasts about an hour as it is a real treat for them and it is nourishing as well.

Groceries sell the same thing for about $2.50 a quart
  • I don't know what your set up is- cooler, fridge or backpacking- how long yer going out for so I'll just throw out some suggestions as they come to me, LOL.

Backpacking- freeze a small container of milk and only eat cereal as long as the milk lasts. Powdered milk made w/ cold water placed in a shakable container. Forego the milk and substitute yogurt which lasts longer w/o refrigeration.

Cooler- store milk next to a block or two of ice. I make my blocks by freezing liquid filled juice bottles.

    Fridge- open and pour:B.

    HTH!
  • I have used both liquid milk and powdered milk mixed regularly. When I was young, I seldom bought bottled milk.

Yes, powdered milk is mostly skim.

But some years past our food experts came to tell us our bodies make better use of natural foods than man made foods. So, I quickly switched back to butter (now unsalted butter) and plant oils over margarine.

& I've gone to using 2% fat in milk vs.less fat & yes I take cholesterol pills. One has to balance the fat content vs. other additives put in for the milk to have a good shelf life, such as salt.

My periodic test results for my doctor support what I'm doing.

Have you thought of consulting with your family doctor to see what combination would work well for you at your present stage of life?

    :C
  • Don't know how long you will be between stops but with the fridge pre cooled(overnight), we can drive 3-4 hours and milk as well as frozen items are fine.
