Meal in Foil

In browsing here, I'm reminded of a meal that my older sisters made in 4-H many, many, moons ago.

Hamburger patty, sliced or diced potato and carrot, some chopped onion if desired. Other veggies if you wish. With a family, everyone can make their own to their liking. Wrap in a foil wrapper and cook meat side down first on coals, then flip and cook on opposite side.

  • I always put a spoonful of mushroom soup in myt foil ackets, adds some gravy!

At the risk of sounding like a total idiot...roughly how long to you cook these? I wouldn't want to repeatedly open the foil to check, but not a fan of overly raw burger.

And this can be done right on the coals or a low rack on a fire? I did something similar with chicken on our little propane grill once. I am so concerned about over or under cooking.

If you are putting any reasonable size chunks of potato in your packets, they will be your duration factor for doneness, not the hamburger. Know where some of the potato chunks are that you can stab for doness check.
  • I think it is important to layer according to how fast the ingredients cook. It seems like it's hard to now scorch the meat a little if you have a lot of potatoes turnips or carrots in the mix. It helps to reduce the size of these pieces. We do meat, then roots, then greens.
Like Dave, we poke them with a toothpick and you don't lose much steam that late in the game that way.
  • another thing that helps is to have the veggies sliced the same thickness. When our Cub Scouts do them, I slice all the potatoes and carrots with my salad shooter. can slice a 5lb bag of potatoes in less than 3 minutes. hint... wash your potato slices with some salt water, so they don't turn brown while waiting to put in the pack. Kids will not eat Brown Potato Slices.

If you go to the reynolds foil website, they have a bajillion foil pack combinations.

A small amount of lemon juice or vinegar in some water will also work.
  • I did the abbreviated version this weekend..just the meat. Took 2 nice sirloin patties, put some sliced mushrooms and green peppers on top, then sprinkled the Lipton onion soup. My husband made quite the fuss over them and I did too!!!!! Went great with corn on the cob

    Thanks
