Put it on the heat, and not hot, just warmed up well. Put a little oil, or lard or what ever you have. Add some sea or kosher salt to it. Rub that around with a terry towel. You may have to repeat it to get it all off if it's bad rusted.

I think you have a viable question yet since the OP's question was about removing rust the process is different.
Oh and I heat dry my CI on the stove in general AFTER salt cleaning it and water rinsing, then oil and when I'm feeling "splivy" continue the process in a hot oven:D.
I learned my process from my Nana and it makes me feel attached to her even though it's much the same as your's:).
I suspect it's not much different from your process
