I have done the same thing with vinegar, paper towels, a "Scotch Brite®" pad and a little elbow grease.
1. Place towels in pan, making sure all rusted parts are covered.
2. Soak towels with vinegar.
3. Wait about an hour.
4. Remove towels and wipe away most of the rust.
5. Remaining rust can be removed with the "Scotch Brite®" pad and vinegar.
6. Dry pan and season as if it were a new one.
