I have done the same thing with vinegar, paper towels, a "Scotch BriteĀ®" pad and a little elbow grease.
1. Place towels in pan, making sure all rusted parts are covered.
2. Soak towels with vinegar.
3. Wait about an hour.
4. Remove towels and wipe away most of the rust.
5. Remaining rust can be removed with the "Scotch BriteĀ®" pad and vinegar.
6. Dry pan and season as if it were a new one.
