So. AZ. Mexican Food

We spent much of last winter looking for good Mexican and were disappointed.

Amado, Huachuca City, Sierra Vista, Tombstone area, Bisbe, Benson....

Any ideas for good authentic as we are headed down that way again this winter.

Authentic Mexican can be had in Mexico. What you get in the US is American-Mexican. People keep saying they want authentic Mexican but the food products made here are not going to be the same as in Mexico. JMHO

This is what my husband says....he is a retired trucker and has been all over the U.S. Some of his favorite foods were in small stands in the border towns prepared by Mexicans--that, he said, was authentic Mexican food!

    My favorite Mexican food--TAMALES!
  • I prefer New Mexican mexican food. We use green or red chili rather than jalapeno.
From my experience mexican food from Mexico use jalapenos for flavor. Outside of New Mexico look for food cooked with real chili.

Food made from green or red chili can be mostly found in Espanola, Santa Fe, Albuquerque , Socorro, NM ;and somewhat in Las Cruces. There are also isolated good "mexican" restaurants throughout the US.

  • Thanks for the links and areas around Tucson.

We are however looking for places South of Tucson in the areas we mentioned in our opening post.

Again, did not find anything authentic South of Tucson and really surprised.
  • If you get as far as Tucson here are some options:

    LaFuente upscale Mexican

El Charro also upscale, a bit over rated lately

BK Carne Asada fast food, great Mexican hot dogs

Los Nopales not our favorite, but a lot of folks like it.

Mi Nidito have not tried this one yet

    Los Portales family style, excellent

Perfecto's great soup, small family run, friendly and popular with the locals, DW says "all the ambiance of a bus station", not open late.

Little Poca Cosa right in the heart of downtown, unusual atmosphere, really good food!
