Good time of year to make bread, usually sour dough.The worst bread i ever made is better than store bought.Use a bread machine,cost about 40 cents a loaf.
You can get some dried starter from an original 1847 Oregon Trail start here, for free, or a donation if you care to make one. It works well, becomes a great starter, and I like the idea of it being living history.
