Suggestions for Pie Irons/Sandwich Makers?

We have two boys, ages 9 and 12, and would like to pick up a few pie irons/sandwich makers for grilled cheese, etc., on family trips. Single, double, aluminum, cast iron...too many choices! What would you recommend for a family of four and why?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
  • Cast Iron is the way to go and Rome has the best and largest array on the market for campfire fun cooking.

    Amazon has most of them.
  • Before you buy the cast iron for kids...they are very heavy, especially for a kid. I have had the aluminum double for years and never had a problem. I also have a cast iron panini and round burger cooker and never use either on. They are just too heavy to sit there and hold over the fire.

Wichever way you go...alum or cast iron, get the double sandwich cooker. If you get tired of sandwiches two triangles of crecent roll dough fill the bottom perfectly for pizzas and desert pies with pie filling. Two triangles in the top and two on the bottom.

If you melt and aluminum pie iron in the fire, your doing something wrong.

Double ditto. Our grands love them.
  • There is a great Pie Iron Cookbook on Amazon as well that has lots of great ideas!
