Good question! I like food but I put my life/enjoyment of other things in life ahead of that. I have a lot of dietary restrictions for health reasons. I can live with 99% of them (like real bacon) and the other 1% (like corned beef) become occasional treats in moderation.
I actually like thick unprocessed organic turkey bacon. It cooks up crisp and flavorful and I don't miss pork bacon.
Having worked as an ICU/CCU RN and the in nursing home management, I've got a pretty good view of who (demographically, diet-wise) is dying of heart attacks/strokes, and who is living in long term care. While some health issues have a genetic component lifestyle (diet, lack of exercise, smoking) is the straw that breaks the camel's back for many people.
And trust me, those people who proudly boast about enjoying life and life is too short not to eat what you want, etc., change their tune pretty fast when they're having a heart attack. Nobody says ok doc, let me go, I ate food that was no good for me and enjoyed every minute of it, so, the trade-off was worth it, I'm ready to go now.
I don't begrudge anybody their bacon, hey, I love it too, I just decided other things were more important. (And since DH works for a major pharma, I guess you could say a certain statin pays my mortgage- thanks to the bacon-eaters, lol!!)
