Though not a real pirate ship, there's a pirate cruise that runs in Wildwood, NJ. We've never taken the ride, but they go out to Sunset Lake and are attacked by pirates and you defend against them with water canons. We have a home right up the street and see them out all the time. There are also a ton of other things to do in Wildwood while there.

Several years ago we were not far from Tampa, Fl. and they were advertising
Gasparilo Days (or something similar). We did not see any of the events that went on for several days, but I think it was a Pirate Theme with parade and events on the harbor. Maybe someone else here knows more about it. I realize Tampa is a little far for your upcoming trip, but it might be something you could plan for another year. I'm guessing this event was in January or February.

Thanks for some cool ideas. The St Augustin FL would be a neat trip, it would take two 500 mile days to get there but could be doable.
Going to Erie would make a nice weekend trip we are about 2 or so hours away from there.
And I never even thought about seeing the USS Constitution.

Make the loop: Mystic, New London (the barque Eagle) then up through RI (whalers museum) to Weymouth to Plymouth to Boston to Salem. That's piling on a heck of a lot of history and while not as much piracy, there was a heck of a lot of smuggling.

How about Boston and see the USS Constitution?

Before you go to great lengths, look up the Niagara that is docked in Erie. Does he know that pirates used what ever ship that they could get? There was really only one romantic thing about the pirates of the 18th and 19th century, and that was the fact that they operated as a true democracy. Too Bad,

I'd recommend Mystic Conn Seaport as well and also really close is the Submarine Museum. Now that's not Pirates but it is cool!
Mystic does have Pirate Days but may not fit your travel time:

Stay there a few days, then head to Salem Mass - They have a Pirate museum
Salem Pirate Museum - is small but my girls enjoyed it - was led by a tour guide that was a hoot. Here's my post from our New England Trip when we went to the Salem Pirate Museum

Pirateland is a campground heading South - near Myrtle Beach, SC -Has a Pirate Theme and highly rated.

Though I never did this - did see a Pirate ship trip at the Jersey Shore NJ Shore Pirates - check that out on your own....
