To clarify my comment on price. Im willing to pay more (within reason) for a nice campground, well kept, spots not on top of each other like a RV resort. Doesn't necessarily have to be a huge distance, but decently spread out.
Within reason is probably the key.. Am I willing to pay double (say $70 a nite?) Probably not. But Im not adverse to paying, say $45 a night, or $10 more than the average rate for an area. I do like my personal space.
I still believe the number one consideration is location. Are you in an area that draws tourism or not? Many of us, I would surmise most, use campgrounds as a base location to go do things locally. I might hang at a campground for a day during a few day trip, but mostly, we go out and explore the local area, returning for dinner and a campfire maybe.
