Kids & I went to Trillium Lake on MT Hood in beautiful Oregon. Forgot it was Memorial Day weekend so very crowded but still fun. Kids & I hiked around the lake Friday. We filled a entire trash bag with fishing line, fast food containers, beer containers etc,. Ended up doing a second loop of the lake Sunday. Filled up two trash bags. This totally confuses me. Folks come to see the beauty and trash it. Just cannot wrap my mind around this. What are folks thinking? Very sad but true

My thoughts are that the folks who only go camping on the 3-day weekends are not the folks who care about the beauty of their environment.

I make my kids do a "police call" and pick up the trash around our site before we leave after a weekend trip. I like to leave my site cleaner that what I found it.

X2 on the three day campers possibly from the big city where trash is a way of life.Kudos to you and yours for cleaning up. If all of the walkers would carry at least a plastic grocery bag with them the world would be a better (cleaner) place.

It is sad. I pick up trash in many of the boondock spots I camp at. Not hard to get several bagsfull, and it's usually the weekenders doing it. Many of these folks have the attitude of "I'll do what I want" and "I pay taxes.. you clean it up."

Previous posters make a good point. I also observed we have a new wave of citizens to our country with different values. I am not a fan of tax money going for advertising regarding the effects of littering. However, it may be effective.
