2014 vet bills

I always tally my vet bills for the year but have been reluctant to do so for 2014 because I knew it was high. Total came to $6,123. #lovemydogs!!! but hopefully won't have a repeat of 2014 cause we aren't wealthy by any means!!!!
  • At the beginning of the year a few years ago, DH asked me if I knew how much we'd spent on the pets the previous year. He's a numbers guy and tracks these things pretty much to the penny, so I knew he was attempting to open a conversation. And I had a pretty good idea of the figure. The pets had had a lot of medical issues, so we'd spent quite a lot. I gave him one of those wife looks I'm sure many of you know and said in my calmest, most serious and you-don't-won't-to-go-there voices: "No. And I don't care."

He's a smart guy. He hasn't mentioned it ever again. ;)
  • Brush your dogs teeth every day! Really, Who does this? Paid $1500.00 for my little 10 year old pugs dental work and gum issue. Any doggie dentist in Algondonnes? lol Yeah, we love our pets.

Boy that dollar figure sure brings back unpleasant memories of owning Danes and having to budget thousands of dollars for bloat surgeries, bone problems etc.:(

10 years and counting now with smaller breed dogs and the worst case scenario with vet bills is yearly teeth cleaning with these small dogs. Yup I am good with that.

Except I now have to include these guys in my will because unlike the Danes they will most likely out live me!:C
  • I warned each of our little girls the trip to the vet's office is one way. They can be replaced from the rescue for $150.

Just kidding, we don't dare count the vet bills.
  • brewjaz, yeah like we have $500 per month to put back for vet bills!!! Wish I had that to put in savings every month!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, we had 2 dogs that were in the vet hospital between June 1 and August 16 and they required payment at time of hospital visit. Those bills were over $4,000. In the 37 yrs we have been married, we have had dogs 30 of those yrs. In all of those yrs we have never had the expenses we did in 2014. Usually $2,000 to $2,500 over the course of the year is expected, plus grooming. 2014 just happen to be the year of vet bills!!!
  • I have never thought about that. My fur babies usually only go once a year for their checkups and shots. With 4 cats and 2 dogs I do get a slight discount for multiple pets.
  • Ouch! Adds up quickly doesn't it? I've had pet insurance since 2001. I have (rescued) mixed breeds which (because of hereditary diseases) makes the premiums much less than a pure bred. Thankfully, I haven't had to use it except for one year--I had a dog with degenerative myelopathy--I was so glad I had it--my boy had multiple tests, water therapy, acupuncture, you name it.

Of course, you're usually better off if you are disciplined enough to save money every month for vet bills....I'm not.
  • Ours get tallied every year because they get expensed as part of our farm; ours will be high this year too due to problems with our litter.
