Aren't there also aps that notify your cell phone if the unit gets above a certain temp? I thought I read about that on here.
I was also going to suggest finding a local doggie day care near where your appointments are. Check with the VA and see if they might have a recommendation. Is there anyone you can bring with you who might be willing to stay at the camper with the pup just for this trip? Otherwise I agree with the others who have suggested boarding him with your vet or a local kennel (get recommendations!) so you don't worry.
