A Tale of Two Cats

About a year ago my neighbor found two very young kittens in a box while he was out 'treasure hunting' which is his term for driving through affluent areas on trash day. These two kittens were almost dead, in fact the Vet. he took them to recommended they be put down. They weren't.

He nursed them back to health with an eye dropper for formula, Karo syrup and bread dipped in milk. He did this for several weeks until they started to eat on their own. They followed him everywhere and sat in the window waiting for him if he went anywhere. They are small cats, very quiet but playful.

Two days ago they went missing. Just vanished. My neighbor walked the entire neighborhood several times looking for them, nothing. No bodies, no trace. Went to the animal shelters, and put an ad on Craigslist. Nada. He began to suspect another neighbor who has several bird feeders and is known to squirt cats with a Super Soaker if they come around his yard, thought he may have done in his cats and he was working himself up into confronting the guy.

This afternoon I went into the back yard to fire up the BBQ grill and just happened to find one of his cats. I looked over at my neighbors shed in his backyard and saw a gray cats head looking out of the window at me mewing to beat the band. I couldn't hear him but his eyes never left me an his mouth was making the motions. I walked around the front of the house and my neighbor was sitting on his porch, staring at the bird neighbor with an evil look in his eye.

I asked him if he had found his cats. In words I can't type here he told me "no". I asked him if he had checked his shed. He told me they can't get in, it's sealed up. Then a light went on in his eyes and he bolted. Left me standing there. When I got back to the shed he was just unlocking it. As soon as he opened the door two streaks, one gray, one calico shot out the door. Seems he had taken some summer things out to his shed with the cats following him and they, being cats, probably were exploring when he locked the door.

The cats were very thirsty and hungry but seemed more interested in weaving between his legs and purring VERY loudly.

I like it when a story ends well.

Safe travels Bob J.
