And now we can haz kitteh!

Oh lordy. We got a frantic phone call at 11pm from DD20 about a week ago. She found a little kitten in front of her boyfriend's apartment. He already has 2 cats, so that was a no-go. She had already tried to reach a rescue group, but couldn't get anyone. So she begged us to let her bring us home.

DH has severe lung disease and both of us are allergic to cats. Oy! what am I'm getting into??

You know what I did, right? Yes. We now have a very small kitty living in our basement. DD has moved her camping mat and sleeping bag down there and plans to move the rest of her stuff down there once we get it painted.

The kitty is really adorable--a red long-haired tabby, possibly a red Maine Coon. She's very sociable and knows how to use a litter box, so obviously someone has been caring for her. I think probably somebody dropped off this litter of kittens at the apt thinking that they'd get taken in. DD was going to try to find a home for it, but once she named it, you know....So, Data is now a member of the family.

I am really proud of my DD. She found a low-cost cat clinic and took the kitty there for a vet check and vaccines. The vet tested her and says the kitty is clean, somewhere between 4 & 8 weeks old. So she's going to be spayed next month to give her a little more time.

Data is really a cutie. If I can get DD to help me upload a picture I will. We haven't tried to introduce her to Tiki, our highly prey-driven neurotic Bichon. Maybe later, when the cat has some size on her.

What does she plan to do with the kitten when she moves out? If she isn't planning to keep it forever it's better to find it a home now when it's a cute baby than when it's an adult.

God bless you for your kindness. I agree re keeping kitten separate from the dog. Dogs have killed kittens.

Data? Could she be a Star Trek fan? ;)

:B You get the prize. This little kitten has the most unusual yellow-green eyes, just like Data. She's only about 5" tall and I bet she doesn't even weigh a pound. NO WAY am I going to let my psycho Bichon anywhere near this kitten!

DDs plan has been to move out to live with friends next spring, when she will be nearly done with her culinary degree. So I guess we'll be fixing up the basement enough for her to live down there for about 9 months. The kitten really is a sweet thing. Last night I went down there to talk to DD and found her lying on her stomach doing homework, while the kitten "surfed" on her back.

  • Well. You were the hero, but....Even if you keep the cat in the basement, the dander will circulate thru the rest of the house, and may aggravate DH's allergies and lung disease. A highly prey driven Bichon may not play nice with a fast moving kitten. IMO, I would try to rehome it.
  • If BF is going to be a long term situation, it's easier to introduce a tiny kitten than a cat to new cats, generally. They'll growl around a little but with some extra attention and pheremones they should be fine.
  • Congrats to all of you'all for taking Data in! ...

BUT you know how it goes here at the Pet Stop ...

  • If Data is like 99.9% of all cats I've met, she will settle the dog-cat situation zippy paw-dah!

& while I haven't hosted a cat in some time, I speak cat. Learned it as a kid.

    meow.
