anxious dog

We have recently started to go camping with a travel trailer. we have a Dachsund that is the most mellow dog ever. For some reason when we take her away with us she goes nuts. She loves to ride and is fine as long as we are with her. We took her to the vet after the first trip and they gave us some meds that will make her relax. If you know my dog she is always relaxed so it is hard to tell if it has worked. On the second trip it obviously didnt work. We also gave her a chew called happy traveler. It is made with turkey and it is supposed to make them tired. We ended up giving both to her only to come home and find a note on the door about her howling while we were gone. Unfortunately it wasnt signed so we couldnt apologize. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

  • Before giving Benadryl, be sure to check. Seems like I have read negative info?
  • At least you know your dogs a problem when you leave - some owners don't. They make dog collars that are suppose to train dogs not to bark - never used one but it maybe an option.
  • I think like humans, dogs get excited when placed in a new environment. They have better hearing and smell than we do so the new noises and smells can be disturbing until they get used to it.

The two dogs we had would start calming down after the second day in the same place. One thing that worked is frequent or long walks. They would be tired and nap.

The howling when left alone is hard to stop. Some have had luck with the shocking collars. Our dog trainer suggested using a metal lunchbox with some stones in it. It requires some time to take effect. Leave a window open where you can toss in the lunchbox. Act like you're leaving, one of you stays out of sight by the RV the other drives off or walks off. If the dog begins to howl the person on the outside in a stern voice says the dogs name followed by "No" and then toss in the metal lunchbox. Make sure you use a window that is away from where the dog normally is located and one they can't get out of.
We used a window next to our kitchen sink so the lunchbox would fall in the sink.

It took about two weeks for both dogs to stop. This same technique can be used to stop other behaviors...it's real effective for keeping dogs from running out an open door.
  • I have heard of people giving there dogs Benadryl. It is suppose to relax dogs when they go on air planes or they have separation anxiety. I haven't done this myself so I can't speak from experience.
