I leave my 3 dogs unattended on a regular basis. Every single time that I do I ask the neighbors if they have heard anything. In 7 years that answer has always been NO. So I would say that for the right dog it is okay to be left alone. IF my dogs were barkers there is no way I would leave them.
The dogs are well walked, the blinds are closed, the tv is on, and the fan or airconditioner is on as required.
