Bud just had anothe seizure

Last moth Bud had a seizure and he just had another a few minutes ago. I called the vet and they don't want to start him on meds until they are less then a month apart. Bud just walks nonstop now around the dining room table. I don't know if I should call the vet back to get some meds to calm him down.

I took Bud to the vet and he had settled down a little by then. After talking with him we decided against a shot and I would watch him.

I found out there is a pre and a post to seizures.

Thank you for the update. I hope he'll be ok. My thoughts are with you two.
  • Our boy Standard Poodle started having seizures around 3 years.

2-3 a week, sometimes more. The vet wanted to get him on Phenobarb which makes them lethargic and has some bad side effects like liver damage. Plus regular blood te$ting the rest of their life.

I searched online and found some canine epilepsy forums and people were recommending changing food to better food. No grains, natural preservatives, human grade meats. He was on Science Diet, recommended by the vet.

We switched to California Natural at first. Within a month his seizures went from 2-3 a week to 2-3 a month and within a year, 2-3 a year.

We also dropped some vaccines and went from the stronger 3 years vaccines to smaller annual doses spaced out over the year per U of F Vet school.

We later switched to Fromms as California Natural had a recall.

    Fromms never has.

Your vet should examine him for tumors or some other causes which we did, including an MRI at U of F Vet College to eliminate causes but its probably idiopathic epilepsy. (cause unknown)

The forums also recommended a few drops of Bachs Rescue Remedy when he would seize and it seemed to shorten the episode and recover a little faster.

Read some forums. Lots of info.
  • So sorry, Colliehauler, we went through this with Champ. Actually I read somewhere to give him small amounts of ice cream after the seizure. That was supposed to bring him back from the pacing and agitated behavior. Champ paced too, and he did sort of respond to the ice cream when I gave it to him. Just plain vanilla given with a teaspoon - not very much - just a little. I would call the vet and have him examined again. Champ was on Phenobarb - sometimes the dogs go on Valium. I had a dog on that too. And Champ had a seizure in the trailer when we were in a campground in northern Illinois. We went home the next day. Hopefully the issue of the seizures can be resolved. I know how much he means to you. Sending prayers and good wishes. PM me if you want more information - sad to say I've been there and done that, and I know what it's like.

Rita and Andy, who's hanging in there with his liver issues.
  • Ask them why is that. My female beagle had 2 seizures. About a couple months apart. After the 2nd one our vet put her on some meds. I experimented until I found the lowest dosage that would prevent the seizures. Didn't prevent an expensive case of pancreatitis, but she has not had a seizure since. (the last year)

Every vet is different and Bud is your responsibility. Maybe a 2nd opinion is in order. There is no skin off their back if a seizure occurs that causes permanent damage.

We changed vets because treatment from the prior one just wasn't up to the standard of care that we wanted, it really started lacking after the vet had a health issue himself that caused some judgement/care issues.

What brand of food do you feed him?
Pedigree dry with a can of wet split 3 ways on top. Along with limited people food of a evening.
  • I'm so sorry to hear about Bud, I know exactly what your going through. We dealt with it on our senior Boston a couple years ago. He had one major one and in fact thought we were going to loose him but he bounced back like nothing happened. He only had a total of 2 more in 2 years but we had to make the ultimate decision back in Feb. not related to seizures. Hopefully Bud will bounce back for you.
