car sick cats?

Hello,

We travel with two cats and for a while, they did pretty well not getting car sick. As they have aged, it is occurring more frequently, usually within the first twenty miles from home.
What have others tried to help calm cats and allow them to tolerate travel better?

  • We use Cerenia (prescription medication) with Henry. There are other prescription medications along with some OTC medications and many can be formulated into "transdermals" so they can be applied to the ear rather than dealing with pilling a cat. There are calming natural products that i'm sure many will give their experiences.

Discuss the options with your vet, he/she has the best info about your cat and basic health information necessary to make the best choice.

  • My daughter's cat gets car sick every time he is in a crate. They finally started traveling without crating him and he has never been sick since. Nerves maybe?
  • Our two old boys (19 & 17) don't travel as well as they use to.

Joxer (17 yo) becomes motion sick just walking the carrier out to the truck. (could be nerves) The vet gave us a pill that we give him 1 hour before leaving. We also restrict their food on travel days so cut down on the urpies. The pill is actually a motion sickness pill for dogs, we use it off label and only a quarter tab.

Imp (19 yo) has to use the litter box more often. I line their carrier with a puppy pad and it helps if we can't find a good place to stop when he tells us it is time for him to go!

A couple of squirts of Feliway in the carrier before they load also seems to help.
  • Have you had them checked out by a vet?

Are they in carriers while you're on the road? If not, is it possible they are getting into something when they first get in the RV?

    Have you changed their food?

I would look at things that have changed other than just their age and get the checked out. Seems to me, it's more likely to be something else that is causing the trouble if they've traveled in the past without issue.
