Coconut oil for dog's skin?

SIL swears by coconut oil for dog's skin and coat. Says it fights yeast infections and makes their coats soft and shiny. She mixes it with their food. Thoughts?
  • Has he been confirmed to have a yeast issue? Coconut oil is considered to be somewhat helpful, but undecenoic acid tests as more effective.
  • When our dogs were alive we gave them Vitamin E capsules. One per day per dog. They lived to 15/16 yrs.
  • Years ago we gave our Lab fish oil capsules. They made his coat soft and shiny.
I'm sure the coconut oil would do the same thing.
  • Coconut oil has many fatty acids and some omega oils. These are almost always beneficial to skin and hair. You would probably get similar benefits from any source of Omegas but a specific product may work better in one individual vs another. Kind of a process of trial and error.
  • I agree. I buy Tropical Traditions coconut oil and coconut cream and give both to my dogs. They love it. It's very beneficial for both people and dogs.
