Well ... here goes...
I've lost maybe a dozen dogs and cats over the years and I personally feel that it would have been selfish of me to keep them going and suffering the whole way just for my own edification.
An animal's pain is not is pleasant thing to watch or for them to endure.

Your opinion is very valid, I do not intend to let him suffer.
