We have never used crates. They take up too much room and have never (knocking on wood) had behavior issues that required them. We have always had adult dogs from shelters, so I guess that makes a difference. I can't imagine how you are going to fit a crate into an RV of any size, especially for a dog as big as yours will be. I know that some dog owners swear by crates, but maybe you can find a way to do without one.
