Dental treats without chicken?

Just spent a good half hour looking for dental treats for Jesse & Jake that don't have chicken in them. Got plain, beef rawhide, but then there's the whole issue of pulling pieces out of their throats when they get too small. They aren't into anything nylon or rubber, and lose interest in elk antlers pretty quickly. Their teeth aren't bad but need help. Suggestions?

  • I used to be able to scale my buff dogs' teeth when I groomed them.
However, they are all gone now, and I have 2 parti colors, who were both rescues. Neither of these two will hold still and tolerate me flicking the tartar off their teeth.
  • We have a groomer clean their teeth a couple of times a year (no anesthesia) and vet says they look fine. I also brush their teeth every night with beef flavored toothpaste and a rubber finger cot. They come running for me to "make their teeth pretty." If I forget, they come and remind me. :)
  • You can make homemade dehydrated beef/turkey/salmon jerky, dried sweet potatoes/carrots-or fresh/frozen green beans. My Beau loved asparagus.
  • When I had my old boy, he was eating all home cooked soft food. His teeth were getting skanky, but he was too old to put under anesthesia. I got the Top Performance Dental Spray from Pet Edge. He was always big chewer - loved the moozles by Merrick. His teeth were looking really good for his age and diet.

More recently, I've been using the Tropiclean Clean Teeth Gel - also from Pet Edge. This stuff doesn't require any brushing. Just put the gel in there every night before bed.

I have a 13 y/o girl now and she is not a chewer. I'm hoping to get her teeth cleaned up with this gel.

I really don't like putting seniors under for just a dental.
  • I like cow ears - they have a slightly abrasive texture and take a long time to chew for most dogs (Calvin perhaps excepted..LOL!)

    Thanks, Pops-I'll look into them.

Doxie, vet only wants to do that as a last resort because they need to be put under. Would like to avoid that if possible. Antlers were working great but they loose interest in them fairly quickly.

I agree, I'm a nervous wreck when any of my Kid's have to go under for a procedure!

    Good Luck!

  • ... Not sure if it's for teeth, but I give Calvin Jumbones. Seems to be similar texture (sort of anyways) as the Dentastixs.

Just had his once over a month or so ago and got a thumbs up from his DOC when she check his tooths!

PS I stopped giving him Nyla Bones and Kong (look like the Michelin Man) toy cause he destroy's them within minutes of giving it to him! Don't want him ingesting the stuff!
