For a big dog, one of the friendliest and most entertaining ones you can get would be an Old English Sheepdog. Weight they run 70 - 100 pounds or more, but if you can get a look at the mom and dad you will have an idea of how much yours may get to. I have had several over my life along with other large breeds, and they take the cake. Aren't called the "clown" of the dog world for no good reason! Our current one loves traveling in the motorhome. Coat can be kept long or short, we keep our short for minimal grooming needs and it keeps him cooler.
For a small dog, I would recommend a Silky Terrier (this is an Australian breed). Extremely friendly and entertaining as well. Again, coat can be long or short, we keep our short to minimize grooming. Loves to travel. Weight on these about 7.5 to 12 pounds. I have had several of these also.
For security, the Sheepdog has what we call an "alarm bark" that would put a pause in anyone's step. But they rarely bark unless spooked. Most Sheepdogs have what I call the "silent" bark - looks like they bark and they shake their head, but more of slight "huff", which I think comes from the breeding of not wanting to alarm the herd unless something was really up.
And so I present Sir Wallace of Earl (Wally) and Sir Winston Churchill (Winnie) - best buds:
