I have five dogs and I'm fostering a sixth. They're all rescues from the local shelter and all mixed breeds. I've fostered more than 40 dogs total. That said, I really like mixed breed rescues. As a foster, I evaluate each dog to see which ones are good with children, which ones don't get along with other animals, if they get carsick, if they're hyper active and need a lot of exercise, etc. If you purchase a dog you have no idea if it get's car sick or is food aggressive until it's too late. Consider going to the local animal rescue and explain what you're looking for.
I would also like to add that retired greyhounds can be really great dogs. The only issue with them is that some of them have been caged their whole life and may take a little effort to house train.
