My suggestion would be English Spring Spaniels.  50 lbs on average, you can give them the exercise they need, and ours, at least, travel well.  You can keep them shaved year-round to eliminate excessive grooming, especially since you live in a warm environment.  Before we got our two ESPs we were torn between them and a Brittany.  We found the rounder-looking face of the Springers a little more appealing so we went with them.
Don't make your pick based on whether it comes from a rescue service or a breeder. Base it on your needs, desires, and constraints. And I whole-heartedly agree that going to a dog show might be of great help in selecting.
