If you get a mature dog that's use to being in a crate 24/7 it's hard to retrain them.
My niece is running into this. She rescued a greyhound a few months ago and is at her wits end with it as far as housebreaking goes. It's her mom (my SIL) that's the lab breeder so she's been around dogs her entire life, has shown multiple breeds at Westminster, is a veterinary surgical assistant, and is a dog trainer. She can't get the dog to housebreak and she's heartbroken. The dog is a real sweetheart but at the same time it's a serious problem that needs resolution.
