I have had different breeds, german sheperd, doberman, rottie, cocker spaniel, mutts, and collies. I didn't choose them, they chose me....when I am ready to adopt I went to many shelters in three states as I was driving through. Took months, but each doggie pretty much chose me. I even walked away from the rottie because of their reputation and she had cage aggression but melted when I talked to her.....took my husband back a few days later to see her again and adopted her. Impulse was not there with any adoptions, I didn't know if the new family member will be big or small but had to be a female. My final selection after a lot of research was a long haired chihuahua. I have a great love for collies but have serious wrist and shoulder problems so grooming got very difficult for me. My husband and I are very happy with our pack of rescued long haired chihuahuas. All adopted doggies were fabulous, very well trained and just wanted to be loved again. I will always say adopt but not on impulse, let the dog choose you...you will know.
That's been my story, too. I was working at a Navy Base years ago. I was walking across the parking lot and a little red puppy came out from under a van and walked right up to me. I picked him up and went around the area asking if he belonged to anyone. One of the gate guards said that he was feral and that his mother and siblings had all been caught and put down. They had been trying to catch him for weeks and couldn't get him. He said that if I turned him in to the security folks he would be put down. I took him home and he lived with me eight years before cancer took him.
