Dog ran over

Dakota was eager to go with wife and some guests. He somehow ended up under the car.
took him to two Vets. they said road rash. He had/has a hard time laying down. He tries to back into laying down. We give him an anti inflametory and a pain pill.
He appears some better since last Monday but can't seem to motivate his tail. It hangs limp with a tiny bit of curl. He acts older and is constantly at my side and wanting me to rub his head and chin, moreso than before.
When he used the bathroom, we used the hose to clean him up the other day.
He bit wife when she tried to help him at first. but she is okay with a wound that is healing.
Tomorrow we take him to another Vet. Others that have seen their dog get hurt: does it sound like his tail is permanently hurt?
  • So what is the actual diagnosis? This whole thread is confusing and worrisome.....................
  • Doc said he's gonna be fine. give him five or six more weeks to be back to full throttle.

IMHO I would NOT wait until tomorrow to see a vet.

Most vets will see you immediately without an appointment when you tell them the circumstances and the symptoms. There 'are' some physical ways of manipulating the dogs body that can tell you without x-rays, if the expense of that is what prevented you from having the x-rays done on the first go around.

His tail is not what you should be worried about. That's an indication that their 'could' be damage to a nerve or spinal cord injury which when treated ASAP can have pretty good recovery results IF attended ASAP.

I know how to do the physical exam to determine where/if spine injury is present sadly from being there done that a few times. But just saying take him to the vet asap and tell the vet what you observed and they will do that type of exam on him and maybe you can dodge the xray costs. Sometimes it's just as simple as to get him a shot to reduce the swelling that might be pressing on the nerve before the nerve actually dies and the dog ends with paralysis.

    Keep us posted. Good Luck.

    ditto X10
Get x-rays on him before irreversible damage is done.

  • When you are in pain, do you want to do things, do you feel "happy"? My guess is that Dakota is sore, in a rotten mood, and just needs to be left alone for awhile, to heal.
Eventually, that tail will start wagging again (even if it was broken), when he feels better.
Do what the Vets suggest, with regard to pain management and antibiotics.

    Good luck
  • Not sure. Im not sure his tail is the thing to be concerned about at this point.

I am sure sorry to hear about Dakota. Them pets become a major part of the family, and you hurt as bad as they do in these situations..

Best of Luck with your baby, and prayers of comfort to you all.
