dog tie ups

we are going to be first time travelers with 2 dogs. One a 25 lb teddy bear and one a 60 # boxer mixer. We understand the rules about keeping dogs on leashes but we are wondering what you do when at the campsite just sitting around. Do you have them on a tie out with a short line or just on a regular leash that you are holding on too? other options

  • We have a geriatric Golden Retriever and a three legged Lab/Chessie cross. Since neither one of them is a jumper any more, we use two fairly short x-pens hooked together. They have plenty of room to move around, but they don't get the run of the site. The pens are the very first thing we unload when we arrive. The dogs go into the pen before we even unhook the trailer, so we don't have them in the back seat of the pickup bouncing around and anxious.

If you use a tie out cable or chain, just make sure to tie it somewhere other than onto the table. Having a pup jump onto the table is trouble waiting to happen. They just have a tendency to keep going and will jump off the wrong side.
  • Coleman pet bed

  • We have 2 Dobermans - I use two types of leads
    1. I have a cable with a pulley. I use rachet straps connected to trees on either ends and thighten the cable. The webbing on the rachet straps protect the tree so n damage is done. Then I connect a 6' leash to a carbiner on the pulley.
    2. My other set up is simply a 6' plastic coated cable with loops on each end. I wrap the cable around any fixed object connect and them with a carabiner. I then conect the 6' leash to the cable with another carabiner. The trick is to make sure the cable can swing around the fixed object so it doesn't get wrappd around the tree.
We also use the fold up dog beds made by Coleman they work great.
  • Ditto what Dog Folks said. The nylon tie-outs we use can be shortened if necessary (similar to how you adjust the length on nylon adjustable collars). And if we're in a really large site I use their leashes to add extra length.

The main problem with tie-outs is preventing the dog from getting tangled around stuff, and in the case of two dogs, preventing them from tangling with each other.

Many people use exercise pens (often referred to as ex-pens or x-pens). Here are some examples from Amazon: Ex pens
  • We use 15 foot nylon tie outs. (the cable ones tend to kink after time) We tie them to the camper so that the dog cannot even come close to the end of the site where people are walking by, an we never leave him alone outside.

In parks with a 6 foot lead,"rule" the rangers tend to tolerate this if your dog is well behaved, and not barking at every passer by.
