Most dogs can be taught to wait until they reach the proper spot, and it requires the owner to walk on a schedule so the dog doesn't get in a desperate situation. I notice that many owners of male dogs let them mark everything they want....posts, signs, spigots, tires, tall weeds....you name it. We have a female now, and she does mark, but i only allow that squatting on common or accepted areas. Sometimes in CG you will see us running to get to the spot!
Our former dog was a male, and he wanted to mark anything that was at least 2 foot high, but I gave him a firm "uh uh" everytime I Saw him start to lift that hind leg, until we reached a proper spot. He listened and learned. Even at home I see people walk their dogs on those annoying flexi leashes and let their dogs mark and pee wherever they want. Female dogs have very acidic urine, so I don't want yellow spots all over our front yard, and I don't allow ours to go anywhere but her designated area. As soon as she knows "ok...go here" she knows.
