To alleviate your fear on at least one count -- almost all well loved pet dogs nowadays are on some type of flea or heart worm preventative that also takes care of intestinal worms. It's been a very long time (like decades) since I've heard of a pet dog having intestinal worms. Of course it's possible a stray dog or wildlife droppings could transmit those.
